Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary by hosting a Gala Dinner at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg.

Doctors, business and government dignitaries were present at the event, which was conducted by Programme Director Darren Maule of East Coast Radio.

The event featured a giant 292kg cake modelled on the newly-expanded Hospital.

MMC, located in the lower CBD, has grown into one of the largest private hospitals in KZN, offering among other services a new, state-of-the-art Heart Centre.

In a major investment for the region’s healthcare sector, Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital has launched a new, multi-million Rand Caesarean Theatre.

Located in the heart of MMC’s, the new Theatre will welcome the city’s new-borns in a world-class facility.

“Safety and quality of our patients and babies are paramount and this unit is located just metres away from MMC’s Maternity, Nursery and Neonatal ICU Units. The flow of care is ideal for babies, mothers, doctors and nurses,” said Sister Raksha Govender, MMC’s Nursing Services Manager.

Pictured at the launch function were some of the obstetricians and anaesthetists who support MMC’s Caesarean Theatre, Maternity and Nursery Units, as well as nurses and other key staff members.

Also pictured were the first family to experience the new Theatre, Colleen Amos (Mum) and Martin Kiwanuka (Dad) with their new baby boy.


Ampath Laboratories embarked on an educational roadshow across private hospitals in KZN. The objective of the roadshow was to illustrate the flow of specimens through their lab facilities. Nursing staff and doctor’s PAs were exposed to the processes involved once a patient is bled. Ampath divisions included nursing services, pre-lab, data capturing, chemistry, haematology, microbiology, cytology and histology.

Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital recently hosted a highly successful CUPPA for CANSA, raising much-needed funds for the NGO, which supports Cancer patients.

Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital’s free Cataract drive was aimed at reaching out while celebrating Mandela Day by chipping away at the backlogs of cataract procedures, affecting particularly the elderly folk of Pietermaritzburg and the KZN Midlands.

Guests of honour included Cogta Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize and Msunduzi Mayor Themba Njilo.

Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital recently observed World Hand Hygiene Day, highlighting the critical importance of good hand hygiene in the healthcare environment.

The Hospital partnered with B Braun to educate staff and other stakeholders on hand hygiene, thereby decreasing healthcare-associated infections.

Initiatives included in-service training, practical demonstrations, as well as the usage of a UV lamp to ascertain the level of hand-washing efficacy.

MMC and Lily recently held a public talk and wellness day focusing on safe fasting practices for Diabetics during Ramadan.

KZN-based Endocrinologist Dr HA Randeree was the keynote speaker at the annual event.
